A landscape project designed to protect from Wellington’s freezing southerlies.

Sloan and Nic needed a large practical space that could accommodate their active family, while also offering a sophisticated, modern and welcoming place for socialising and entertaining.

Scapegoats utilised every corner of this large section to achieve the brief, dividing it into purpose built zones while simultaneously maintaining the flow and cohesiveness of the open space.

The front yard offers a stylish and welcoming entranceway to the home, perfectly complimenting the character of the classic turn-of-the-century California bungalow. A remote controlled automatic sliding gate allows effortless access to the long sleek concrete driveway, beyond which lies the expansive back yard.

A vitex deck extends from the house, with a pergola to provide lineal shade and privacy around the new spa pad.

Low retaining walls successfully define the border gardens with their modern native and coastal planting. They also enable the levelling of a large flat lawn space for the kids.

The real magic happens in the furthest corner of this garden, with a private secluded outdoor chill space. Schist paving, a fire pit, a bespoke seat carved from a single slab of organic macrocarpa and a custom vertical hardwood sleeper wall feature.

The entire package, front and back, framed perfectly with purpose built fences. All built to withstand the test of time.

Wisdom

Landscaping in Wellington can present unique challenges. We’ve spent years taming the terrain and know what to consider when designing your dream landscape.

  • Native flora kowhai

Planting with New Zealand native flora

Native New Zealand plantlife is suited perfectly to Wellington’s wily weather conditions. Because of their adaptability to local environmental conditions, most New Zealand native plants are able to thrive in Wellington landscape design.

  • Lawn

    Keeping your lawn healthy

You’d think your lawn would be thriving with all this rain. While summer might sear patches into your lawn and cause your grass to brown, winter drowns everything in mud; the sort that’s easily shifted and deformed under even the slightest application of pressure.

  • Japanese garden

    Lessons from Japanese landscaping

The beauty of ornamental Japanese landscaping is that it can be achieved in the smallest of spaces. A small front yard or back yard can be transformed into an intimate natural escape.
