Keeping your lawn healthy
You’d think your lawn would be thriving with all this rain. While summer might sear patches into your lawn and cause your grass to brown, winter drowns everything in mud; the sort that’s easily shifted and deformed under even the slightest application of pressure.
During the winter months, your lawn will sometimes go weeks without fully drying. Without enough hours of warmth or sunshine to dry it and stabilise it, you’re essentially dealing with a muddy swamp. This is why we get tread marks and deep patches in our lawns. When we park on, drive across or constantly tread over our lawns while they’re muddy and vulnerable, we leave imprints of muddy grasslessness that look awful and uneven when they’ve dried.
Tyre tread marks are some of the worst offenders to your grass when winter kicks in – they create valleys in which rainwater pools, and dry in the most unsightly shapes when summer returns.
It’s easy to avoid such trauma being wrought upon your lawn. All you need is a little Wellington landscaping expertise to set you right.
Keep off the grass
Encourage your family and everyone who visits your home to keep their vehicles off the grass during the rainy months. Create concrete pathways, timber boardwalks or paver stepping stones where foot traffic is common.
Easier said than done? The best way to ensure healthy, happy and untouched grass is to invest in some good landscaping advice. Here are a few additions you can make to your landscaping design in order to keep your grass even and healthy during the wet winter months:
A spacious driveway with enough room to move cars in and out of your garage without having to veer off onto the grass.
Ample pathways between your home, garage, shed, outdoor entertainment area and any pools or playground accessories you might have in the garden. You could ask your landscaper to plant attractive foliage along these pathways to politely discourage feet from wandering where they shouldn’t.
A concrete parking or turning bay – create your own parking spots and spaces where cars can shift and shuffle without disturbing your grass.
Keep your lawn properly drained. For this step, you’ll have to call on your landscaper to assess and correct any drainage issues in your lawn. An expert will be able to see where the water is pooling and how to train it to run in the right direction, avoiding damage and encouraging proper irrigation.
